Why Keeping Your Aadhar Address Updated Matters
Your Aadhar Card is linked to a wide range of government and financial services. An outdated address can cause problems when receiving official correspondence, applying for loans, or accessing government schemes. UIDAI allows you to update your address online through a simple self-service process.
Two Ways to Update Your Aadhar Address
| Method | Best For | Documents Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Online Self-Service (myAadhar Portal) | Those with a registered mobile number | Valid Proof of Address |
| Offline (Aadhar Seva Kendra) | Those without registered mobile or online access | Valid Proof of Address + Form |
Documents Accepted as Proof of Address
- Passport
- Bank/Post Office Account Passbook or Statement
- Electricity, Water, or Gas Bill (within last 3 months)
- Voter ID Card
- Driving License
- Ration Card
- Government-issued residence certificate
- Property Tax receipt
Step-by-Step: Update Address Online via myAadhar Portal
- Visit the Official Portal: Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in on your browser.
- Log In: Click on "Login" and enter your 12-digit Aadhar number. Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Go to Update Services: After logging in, click on "Update Demographics Data & Check Status" or look for the "Update Address" option on the dashboard.
- Select 'Address' to Update: From the list of fields, select Address and click Proceed.
- Enter New Address: Carefully fill in your new address details — house/flat number, street, locality, district, state, and PIN code.
- Upload Proof of Address: Upload a scanned copy or clear photograph of a valid address proof document. File size and format restrictions apply (usually PDF or JPEG under 2MB).
- Review and Submit: Verify all entered details and submit the update request. You will receive a Service Request Number (SRN) via SMS and on screen.
- Track Your Request: Use the SRN on the UIDAI portal to track the status of your address update. Processing generally takes 30–90 days.
Address Update Without Document (Address Validation Letter)
If you do not have a document-based proof of address, UIDAI offers an alternative: the Address Validation Letter process. Under this:
- A secret code is sent to your new address by post.
- You enter the code on the UIDAI portal to validate and confirm your new address.
- This process is useful for people who have recently moved and don't yet have utility bills or other address proofs.
Offline Update at Aadhar Seva Kendra
If you prefer to update offline:
- Visit the nearest Aadhar Seva Kendra or enrollment center.
- Fill the Aadhar Update/Correction Form.
- Submit the form along with a self-attested photocopy of your address proof.
- Pay the nominal service fee (currently ₹50 per update, subject to change).
- Collect your acknowledgment slip with the Update Request Number (URN).
Important Things to Remember
- Only your registered mobile number can be used to log in and request online updates.
- Name, date of birth, and gender corrections require visiting an enrollment center — they cannot be done online.
- Ensure your documents are legible and the address matches exactly what you are entering.
- Keep your SRN or URN safe until the update is reflected in your Aadhar record.
