Why Is Aadhar-PAN Linking Required?
The Government of India has made it mandatory for all PAN card holders who are eligible to obtain Aadhar to link the two. This is aimed at preventing tax evasion by eliminating duplicate or fraudulent PANs and creating a unified financial identity for taxpayers.
Failure to link Aadhar and PAN can result in your PAN becoming inoperative, which affects your ability to file income tax returns, open bank accounts, and carry out high-value financial transactions.
Who Needs to Link Aadhar and PAN?
Almost all individual taxpayers are required to link. However, certain categories are currently exempt, including:
- Residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and Jammu & Kashmir (as per original notifications)
- Non-resident Indians (NRIs)
- Individuals aged 80 years or above
- Individuals who are not citizens of India
Always check the latest CBDT notifications for updated exemption categories.
What You Need Before You Start
- Your 12-digit Aadhar Number
- Your 10-character PAN Number
- Mobile number registered with Aadhar (for OTP)
- Access to the Income Tax e-filing portal
Step-by-Step: Link Aadhar with PAN Online
- Visit the Income Tax Portal: Go to incometax.gov.in.
- Navigate to Link Aadhar: Under "Quick Links" on the homepage, click "Link Aadhar".
- Enter PAN and Aadhar Details: Input your PAN number, Aadhar number, and your name exactly as it appears on your Aadhar Card.
- Pay the Fee (if applicable): After the deadline, a late fee (currently ₹1,000) is required before linking. Make the payment via the portal using net banking, UPI, or debit/credit card and note the Challan number.
- Validate with OTP: Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhar-registered mobile number.
- Submit the Request: Click Continue. A confirmation message will appear stating your Aadhar-PAN linking request has been submitted.
- Check Status: You can verify the linking status by visiting the same "Link Aadhar" section and clicking "Link Aadhar Status". Enter your PAN and Aadhar to check.
Common Reasons Linking Fails
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Name mismatch between PAN and Aadhar | Update the name on either Aadhar or PAN to match; use NSDL or UTI portal for PAN correction |
| Date of birth mismatch | Correct your DOB on Aadhar at an enrollment center |
| OTP not received | Ensure your Aadhar-registered mobile is active and has network signal |
| Payment not reflecting | Wait 4–5 working days after payment before attempting to link |
Consequences of Not Linking Aadhar with PAN
- Your PAN will be designated as inoperative
- You will be unable to file income tax returns
- Financial institutions will treat your PAN as invalid — affecting loan applications, investments, and account openings
- TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) will be deducted at a higher rate on your income
- Refunds from the Income Tax Department cannot be issued to an inoperative PAN
How to Reactivate an Inoperative PAN
If your PAN has already become inoperative due to non-linking, you can still link it by paying the applicable late fee on the Income Tax portal. Once the Aadhar-PAN link is confirmed by UIDAI and CBDT, your PAN will be reactivated — typically within 30 days of successful linking.
Keeping your Aadhar and PAN linked ensures seamless financial and tax operations. It is one of the most important compliance steps for every eligible Indian taxpayer.
