Why Is the Aadhar OTP So Important?

Most UIDAI services — including downloading e-Aadhar, updating details, linking services, and authenticating identity — require an OTP (One-Time Password) sent to your Aadhar-registered mobile number. If you're not receiving the OTP, you could be blocked from accessing essential services.

This guide walks through the most common causes and their fixes.

Common Reasons You're Not Receiving the OTP

  • Your mobile number is not registered with your Aadhar
  • Your registered mobile number has been deactivated or ported
  • Network or signal issues on your mobile
  • Your SMS inbox is full
  • The number has a DND (Do Not Disturb) filter blocking transactional messages
  • UIDAI server delays during high-traffic periods
  • You've exceeded the OTP request limit for the day

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

Step 1: Verify Your Registered Mobile Number

First, confirm which mobile number is registered with your Aadhar. You can check this by:

  • Looking at your original Aadhar enrollment acknowledgment slip
  • Logging into myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in — the OTP will only go to the registered number
  • Calling the UIDAI helpline at 1947 for assistance

Step 2: Check Network Connectivity

  • Ensure your phone has adequate signal strength
  • Try restarting your phone to refresh the network connection
  • If you're in a low-signal area, move to a location with better reception
  • Check if you can receive other SMS messages normally

Step 3: Check for DND Registration

If your number is registered under DND for promotional messages, transactional OTPs from UIDAI (which are classified as transactional SMS) should still come through. However, some carriers may block them. Contact your telecom provider to confirm that transactional OTPs are not blocked on your number.

Step 4: Clear Your SMS Inbox

A full SMS inbox can prevent new messages from being received. Delete old messages and retry requesting the OTP.

Step 5: Wait and Retry

UIDAI systems can sometimes experience delays during peak hours. Wait 5–10 minutes before requesting a new OTP. Note that there is a daily limit on OTP requests per Aadhar number — avoid repeatedly clicking "Resend OTP" in quick succession.

What If Your Registered Mobile Number Is No Longer Active?

This is one of the most common issues. If the mobile number linked to your Aadhar is lost, deactivated, or no longer with you, you cannot receive OTPs online. In this case:

  1. Visit the nearest Aadhar Enrollment Center or Aadhar Seva Kendra.
  2. Request a mobile number update on your Aadhar.
  3. Provide biometric authentication (fingerprint/iris) at the center — no document is needed for mobile number update.
  4. Pay the applicable service fee (approximately ₹50, subject to change).
  5. Your new number will be linked within a few days and you will receive an SMS confirmation.

Using TOTP Instead of OTP

The mAadhar app generates a Time-based OTP (TOTP) — a 8-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds. This can be used instead of the SMS OTP on supported UIDAI services. If your SMS OTP is not arriving but you have mAadhar set up on your phone, use TOTP as an alternative.

In most cases, OTP issues are resolved by checking your registered number and network status. For persistent issues, updating your mobile number at an enrollment center is the most reliable long-term fix.
